If you believe in fate, you will believe in this story. I was snacky and needed a fix. Unfortunately, I was nowhere near a local keto treat stop and only had access to a grocery store. All the normal suspects were there that claim to be keto but are sugar alcohol-soaked dirty ingredients that make you feel like garbage. However, on the top shelf was a new Mini Chocolate Chip Cookie. The label says they are keto, and the ingredients seemed clean. Fate dictates I had to try them. But how does an Organika Fav Cookie taste?
The Macros of an Organika Fav Cookie
The macros are quite good. In a bag that comes out to 30-grams or about 8 cookies you take in only 150 calories. The fat numbers are great at 14-grams with protein coming in at 4-grams. The carbs appear high at first, but once you get to net carbs the numbers aren’t quite as shocking.
Of the 9-grams of carbs listed 3 are fiber in the form of inulin. Another 4 are sugar alcohols which appear to be a combination of the keto-friendly erythritol and xylitol. Nothing to worry about in there for insulin spikes so it’s good in my books. Doing the math here we have net carbs of 2 with only one of them being naturally occurring sugar.
Ingredients in an Organika Fav Cookie
The ingredient list is what caught my attention the most. The package claims to have no preservatives, no wheat, no soy, no artificial flavors, or GMO (genetically modified organism) products present. The only allergens listed are egg and nut which is from the egg whites and almond flour used in the cookies.
The list of used ingredients is a who’s who of a keto lifestyle. We start with a base of almond flour, which along with coconut flour is the number one alternative in our world to wheat. Next up is chocolate chips with stevia extract. Moving along we come to sugar alcohol’s erythritol and xylitol. We round out the list with cocoa powder, egg whites, and xanthan gum.
These are the cleanest packaged cookies I have come across in my close to three years on keto. If all companies followed Organika’s lead the world would be a healthier place. Or at least friendlier to keto folks.
Who is Organika?
The company’s passion for using clean ingredients led me to a little more research on them. Their health statements mirror mine closely with a low allergen, gluten free, clean ingredient approach. Organika is a Canadian company founded in British Columbia over 30-years ago. These cookies aren’t their first rodeo.
Organika is primarily known for their best-selling collagen powder, but they make hundreds of health products. Many of them speak to a keto audience such as Coconut MCT powder. Organika products are in thousands of retail outlets across Canada including grocery giants Sobey’s and Loblaws. For our American friends you can also order online from their website.
Finally… Does an Organika Fav Cookie Taste?
A lot of this question depends on what kind of cookie you like. If you like a gooey cookie this isn’t for you, but if you’re into a crumbly bit of goodness this will fill the void. The cookie is quite dry and crumbles easily. That texture provides a great crunch in your mouth and makes you instantly realize you’re eating a real cookie. After a litany of poor excuses for keto cookies Organika has all the texture points down.
Okay, Now the Taste…
It tastes like a packaged cookie if that means anything. I enjoyed it but did long for Wendy’s homemade chocolate chip cookies. The flavor is fine and fills a void when you need a treat, but they have a high price point like most keto treats, so that can be a deterrent. Would I recommend Organika Fav Cookies. Certainly, just in moderation.
