So, I sit here two years after starting keto. I’ve lost 165-pounds, improved my health, and literally changed my life. Keto helped me lose the weight, but with that goal being a driving force in my life for the last 24 months what do I do now?
Each and everyday I would wake up, eat, track my macros, work, eat, track my macros, and repeat. It was my whole focus to get this weight off and make sure I am around for years to come. I was diligent and hard working when it came to getting healthy. We learned, opened a website, and kept pushing to reach that goal. I became the lightest I can ever remember being.
Lose the Weight and Switch to Maintenance
The obvious next step for me was to switch to maintenance. In other words, maintaining the weight loss. At first, I kept up the same regimen of when I was dropping pounds, but when I hopped on the scales nothing changed. It seems like a lot of work for no perceived pay off. I had gotten used to feeling good so that number was the only instant gratification I had.
I stopped tracking macros as I have a pretty good grasp of what my day should look like. I stopped stepping on the scale and focused on helping others with a keto lifestyle. Basically, all I did was shift my focus away from myself. The problem is my personality is laser focus, I’m not good at splitting it up so when I started focusing on keto for others, I started to suffer.
Lost Weight Finds It’s Way Home
Then I jumped on the scale for fun last week after noticing my clothes were a little tighter. Turns out I have put on a few pounds. Nothing to blow alarms about yet, but enough that makes me know I don’t want to get back to the place this journey started. It’s time to get back to my roots a bit.
Did this weight come from carbs? Nope, it came from treats. We have several local bakeries that make amazing keto treats that I have been indulging in. Most are made with sugar alcohols that have a similar craving effect to sugar and I’ve been eating far too many. In fact, I hear myself say things like, I deserve a treat, or I better eat all these so I can get clean tomorrow.
Tips For After You Lose the Weight
I’m writing this blog in real time so as I write down how to move forward after you realize you strayed, know that I’m working through it with you.
My first step is going to be realizing I have a problem on my hands. I’m eating and justifying it just like I used to when I gobbled down a whole bag of chips after supper. I’m saying things like I still feel good so I can’t be doing much harm. There is also my personal favorite… it’s been a tough week I deserve it.
Now that I have admitted I have an issue my next step is to do something about it. I intend to start tracking again so I can be accountable. After these pounds come off, I am going to continue the scale and use the number staying the same as instant gratification. The scale isn’t the be all and end all by any means, but for me personally I have discovered it’s important.
By taking those steps I will get myself back on track. I’m confident in that. This will also allow me to be the support system for our readers I want to be.
Keto Together Is Better
We have some exciting things coming up where we can interact with you guys and that is going to be amazing. I want to be at my best for that and be able to tell you I practice what I preach. Accountability is obviously important for me and helping you all is a big step in holding me to that.
I classed this article as tips, but it was more of a personal journey for me to work through the negative thoughts in my head of where my keto journey was going. It allows me the ability to focus on myself in order to help you better.
So, I did lose the weight, but what now? I push forward and realize that maintenance doesn’t mean lazy, it means maintaining your focus and determination to be better.
