Keto planning is the name of the game. It’s too easy to turn to processed, high carb foods if you don’t have a meal plan in place and the right ingredients on hand. Here are five things we always have in our fridge so we don’t wander off the keto path.
1 – Cooked bacon. We cook a package of bacon at a time and keep it in a container in the fridge. That way we have it on hand for breakfast, additions to recipes that call for cooked bacon (like the handy Caesar side salad) and for a snack if we get hungry. There are no carbs in a slice of bacon so it’s perfect to help you get over a bit of hunger.
2 – Heavy cream. Wendy takes cream in her coffee so this needs to be in the fridge AT ALL TIMES. Can’t have her go without coffee! We also use it in recipes for creamy sauces and as whipping cream for topping desserts and chaffles. 3 – Butter. Butter is another keto staple that needs to in your fridge. We use it for greasing pans, adding flavour to vegetables and our baking. Whenever you can add butter, keto tells you to do it so it’s important to always have on hand.
4 – Cream cheese. Cream cheese is also something we use a lot. We usually have 3-4 packages in the fridge. When it gets down to one or two, it’s time to go shopping! It’s in many of our chaffle and other dessert recipes, as you will see if you checked out our e-book Sweet Keto. It’s also a way to give sauces and casseroles a bit of creamy tang.
5 – Cheese packages. A little cheese is a good keto snack option and you can get ones that are different flavours so you don’t get bored. Babybel is a great option and we prefer their original ones. There is only 1 carb in two Babybel’s. You can also find snack-sized options of Gouda, Havarti, Old Cheddar and Swiss cheeses. Double check the nutritional information, but most have 1 carb per package.
So that’s a quick glimpse inside our fridge. Having these items on hand keeps us organized and ready to eat keto on days when it would be easier to just order a pizza or get McDonald’s. It’s part of how we stay on track and motivated to be healthier and keep control over the food we eat.
