Before keto you wouldn’t find me very often without a beer in my hand. As I type that I realize that may have been part of the reason why I came in at 350 pounds. I was far from an alcoholic, but I really enjoyed my beer. I loved the commercial flavors like Bud and Coors, but also was really getting into the micro breweries. Keto changed that very quickly as beer is not very keto friendly. But last weekend I finally tried what turned out to be a game changer for me. Molson Ultra
Molson Ultra vs Budweiser
We will use Budweiser in this case as an example of why beer isn’t keto friendly. I drank a lot of Budweiser and discovered the carb count isn’t exactly conducive to our lifestyle. One can of Bud has 11 carbs. So, if I’m sitting around with friends for an average night of a six pack, (I’m being kind to myself here as it would likely be 10 or 12), I would be taking in 66 carbs. 66 Carbs represents three days plus some on my keto plan.
Three days of carbs in one sitting could easily kick me out of ketosis. When I ran those numbers two years ago, I just simply walked away from beer. But then I found Molson Ultra. The numbers on Molson Ultra are much easier to manage. One can of this magnificent joy juice has 2 carbs. You read that right… 2. For six beer I will only be taking in 12 carbs total. Even if things get out of hand and I roll through the entire case I still can stay close to my daily total with 24.
Molson Ultra Downside
I will get to flavor soon, but let’s address the elephant in the room when it comes to this low carb genius. Molson Ultra comes in at only 3% alcohol count. As a Canadian we are used to beer that sits in the 5 – 6% range. I really didn’t know what to expect from a beer that may not give me that liquid courage I need to hit the dance floor. In reality, I had forgotten one of the number one rules when it comes to keto and drinking… take it easy skippy.
When you’re living a keto lifestyle, you need to realize your body doesn’t process alcohol as well as you used to. Liquor of all sorts will hit you much harder and faster then before. Two things are happening at the same time. Your body doesn’t know how to process the alcohol and there’s a good chance you don’t have the body mass you used to. Those add up to make you a cheap drunk.
This cheap drunk used that to his advantage this weekend and I got that nice tingly feeling just fine from my new friend Molson Ultra without over doing it and ending up on an aircraft carrier in Halifax Harbour that you can only get to by helicopter… that’s another story for another time.
The Taste of Molson Ultra
This was the big one for me. How does it taste? I’m not going to sit here like an obnoxious beer connoisseur and tell you about malty hints of this or that. I simply wanted to know if it tasted like beer. I can happily report it does. In fact, it tastes like a good beer.
If you need a comparison, I will say its taste is most like that of popular light beers like Coors Light or Bud Light. Molson Ultra was smooth and didn’t have any weird after taste. I would best describe it like BEER. You have no idea how happy it made me to just say I was having a beer.
Alternative’s We Found
The reason for all the alcohol talk is last weekend was we were at a motorcycle rally as you saw on our social media and each night seemed to have some adult beverages involved. Neither Wendy nor I are big drinkers anymore, but we tried a few different things over the three days.
I won’t go into great detail on those, but for us keto folks there are a lot of options at the local booze store these days. Hard Seltzers that are zero carb and gluten free have become very popular and are easily accessible. We had a few different brands but found the large commercial brewery flavors tended to taste the same. Our advice is to find the local brand and give it a try. There tends to be more local based seasonal flavors and the quality was just superior.
Conclusion
If you’re missing beer like I was and just need to have one, Molson Ultra is the starting point. I of course ask you to drink responsibly, but I also understand that beer is such a part of our social fabric that sometimes it’s nice to just have something without having to explain yourself to everyone.
For me it was a point of finding something I enjoyed from my old life I can add to my new life in a safe and healthy way. Molson Ultra is a delicious alternative to carb heavy beer that just let’s you sit back and enjoy a cold one.
