Monk Fruit, Stevia, and if youāre a rebel ketoāerā¦ Swerve. These are the go to sweeteners online. Monk fruit and stevia because of their all natural ingredients, even though itās a very extensive process to extract the sweetness from them. Swerve comes into play because of its ability to go toe to toe with sugar for sweetness and it causes very little gut discomfort unlike the bad guys of the sweetener worldā¦ aspartame, equal, or splenda. Right in the middle of that fight is Truvia Sweetener.
Is Truvia Sweetener a Breakthrough?
Some in the keto world herald Truvia as a breakthrough due to its ability to be used like sugar, but not contain the after taste often associated with low calorie sweetener. Others in our community say Truvia can alter your metabolism to the point of where it can trick your sugar receptors into releasing insulin and start the fat storage process we aim to fight on keto.
Truth is, if Swerve is okay, so is Truvia. They both rely primarily on the sugar alcohol Erythritol (which I talked about here) to provide the sweetness and a low calorie count. Truvia does use the addition of Stevia extract, but for years we have said Stevia is the go to for sweetness. Sugar alcohols are not absorbed by the body and youāre typically taking in such small amounts they wonāt kick you out of ketosis.
Why Are We Talking About Truvia Sweetener?
This leads to the question: why are we talking about Truvia. Because we use it. When we started keto we just couldnāt find something that either tasted okay or didnāt upset our stomachs. Stevia just had a unique flavour we couldnāt get past and monk fruit was just plain awful in our eyes. We switched to Swerve which served us well and we still use it if it comes on sale.Ā
One day our local grocery store was out of Swerve so we picked up Truvia knowing very little about it. Doing my research I found very little difference between it and Swerve. We went ahead in a keto sugar cookie using it for the very first time and havenāt looked back. Truvia is smooth, easy to work with and quite franklyā¦ tasty.
The Keto World Can Stop With The Hate
So to those out there that villainize this product based on āobservation,ā we say what we always say. You do you and let people do keto in a manner that keeps them motivated. If monk fruit is your thingā¦ monk away. If Stevia turns your crankā¦ leaf extract it up. But leave it at that. Judging peopleās choices in an open forum may make you feel knowledgeable, but just imagine if it made someone quit keto. Because you need to comment on something that doesnāt concern you, a person may not experience the amazing life changing benefits of keto.
Truvia has proven to be safe and effective. Itās worked for us for over six months. It’s our choice. Whatever helps bring the keto movement one step forward by making it accessible to all is the goalā¦ not criticizing others about what you learned from Dr. Google.
Sorry that the product review turned into a rant. Summation. Truvia good – judging bad!
