Keto is a more complicated way of eating than many “diets” out there. It’s more than just giving up a certain food or scheduling some exercise. You have to learn about macros – fat, carbs, and protein. Learning to read nutritional labels on the food packages is essential. It’s also important to track carbs and fat in your daily meals. So, how do you learn about all this? Do you need to go out and buy a bunch of keto diet books before you start?

The Pros of Keto Diet Books

I’ve always been a big fan of books. I love to read, and I’m not good at reading on a screen. Maybe that’s a sign of my age. But, I like having an actual book that I can read, refer back to, and make notes in.

Bill and I bought a couple of books through Amazon when we were just getting started on keto. You can look on Google for top 10 lists of keto books to get you started. You’ll see famous keto names, such as Dr. Eric Westman, Jason Fung, and Maya Krampf. We found them helpful and most have a few recipes to get you started as well.

The Cons of Keto Diet Books

There are a few downsides to buying keto diet books to get you started. It is just one point of view because it’s just one author, or several authors who agree. There is also the expense of buying books. Keto books are not cheap. You’re looking at anywhere from $20 to $40 for most books. And, if you want to refer back to the book when you’re out and about, you’re going to have to carry it with you.

Do You Need Them To Get Started?

Well, no, not really. You can certainly use online sources. Just be sure to check where they are getting their information. You can put anything on the internet with no repercussions, and people do. Double check with other sites to check what is fact and what is opinion only.

We also watched a lot of documentaries. If you check YouTube or Netflix, there are a lot of options out there. I’m a nerd, so I’d take notes as we went, but you can just watch them and enjoy.

We also used our local library for keto book options. That’s a great way to check out if you like a book or not before you buy it. Unfortunately, they tend to be older books that are available so the material might be a bit outdated. And, of course, you can’t make notes in the books because they aren’t yours.

We did it too!

Shameless Self-Promotion of Our Keto Diet Books

You knew this was coming! When we started keto, we had books, we had documentaries, we had websites, we listened to podcasts – and we took notes from them all. It was quite overwhelming. So much of the information was more complicated than it needed to be for us, normal, non-scientific people who just wanted to start this lifestyle. We decided to put it all together in a workbook.

We chose the workbook style because it’s more interactive and user-friendly than a text book or manual. In it, we help you identify your motivation for going keto, an introduction to macros, and a how-to section on reading nutritional labels. We also put in a couple of our favourite recipes in there. So, if you’re interested in a starter workbook for keto, check it out.

A Final Thought

Honestly, we put together a workbook to make starting keto easier for people who are not scientists. Do you have to have this or another book to start keto? Absolutely not. But, you do need to do some research – be that watching videos and documentaries, reading articles on the internet, or listening to podcasts. There’s no way around it. It is not an easy thing to start, but once you get into it, I think you’re going to want to learn more and stick with it!
