We are getting ready to go to Mexico on vacation, and we are so excited. It’s been snowing and cold where we live, and we are ready for some sun! One of the parts we love about the all inclusive resorts are their food. We love to eat, and being on keto hasn’t changed that about us. Eating at the sit-down restaurants can be tricky with the language barrier, but keto and buffets go hand-in-hand.
Keto and Buffets for Breakfast
Breakfast is probably the easiest meal for a la carte restaurants. You simply order the bacon and eggs, and don’t eat the toast and potato side that comes with it. But a buffet is even easier. They have eggs, bacon, sausage, and usually some berries to choose from. Sometimes they even have some nuts you can eat with breakfast. You don’t waste food because you just take what you want.
At the resort we go to, there is an omelet station at the buffet. Yep. You decide what you want in it and they make it to order for you. It doesn’t get any more keto than that! Bill usually loads up with meats and cheeses. I find omelets very filling, so mine has some cheese and I get bacon on the side. The point is, it’s keto and you make it whatever you want.
Buffets for Lunches
On about day 4 or 7 last time, we found a lunchtime buffet and we went back every day until we left. We couldn’t get enough. It had a salad bar and sandwich ingredients. We just ate the sandwich ingredients without bread. There were meats, cheeses, and vegetables. They even made us a special no-sugar drink one day we were there. It was fantastic.
Before we found the buffet, we struggled a bit with lunch. I mean, we had a lot of beer, so we didn’t need a big lunch. But we did find a la carte places with burgers and Caesar salads. One of the salads had anchovies in it. Sure, they’re keto, but eww (Bill liked it). They just didn’t understand why we weren’t eating the bread, and they wanted to know if everything was ok. Try explaining keto in Spanish when the best you can do is “hola.”
Keto and Buffets for Dinner
Sometimes when you are at a resort, you want a fancier option than the buffet. People tend to turn up their noses at buffets, although being a simple sort, I’ve never really understood why. We did the buffet at the resort a couple of times for dinner. We found it was good. There was a great salad bar to choose from. The meats were hot and they would carve the meat you wanted. The vegetables were also steamed and kept hot.
We tried some different dishes that looked low carb. Just a bite or two until we made sure we didn’t taste any sugar in the sauces. Some were really good. Others, not our thing. But it gave us the option of trying something we would never have ordered a whole plate of. Sometimes you could even find a server walking by and ask if they knew what was in it. And, sometimes you wished you hadn’t asked.
The one downside of a buffet at dinner is that there are rarely options for desserts. Actually, that’s a downside no matter what kind of restaurant you go to. At least the buffets sometimes had berries we could enjoy at the end of our meal. Yes, they all looked at us like we were nuts, but we’re used to that by now. We took a couple of prepackaged keto treats to Mexico with us, so we had them back in our room after the meal.
Final Thoughts about Keto and Buffets
Whether you’re in Mexico, Canada, or the United States, buffets are always a great option when you are on keto. There isn’t much at a Chinese restaurant keto people can eat, but a Chinese buffet usually has some options for keto. Between salads, meats, and fish, you can make a meal. It may not be the one you want, but you can eat. Sauces are usually kept separate from the meats, which is great for avoiding sugar. Sure, you aren’t going to make money on the all-you-can-eat buffet, but you won’t go hungry.
