We live in Nova Scotia, Canada, which means that we live summer to the fullest because winters are long and cold. One of my favourite things in the world is BBQ hotdogs and hamburgers. I love the smokiness you get from the grill and the sweet tang of the sauce. A good BBQ sauce makes or breaks the meal. I was nervous about this when we started keto. Where could I find a BBQ sauce that was keto friendly? Was there such a thing? Then, we found G. Hughes BBQ Sauce that is sugar-free.
A History of G. Hughes BBQ Sauce
Ira “Guy” Hughes was raised in Braceville, Ohio with his parents and three siblings. They loved summer, because that meant BBQ. His family had a recipe they used for their sauce, and it was famous in the community. Mr. Hughes used those secret ingredients to become an award-winning pit master. He started bottling the sauces.
As he got older, he (like many of us) realized there was a need for BBQ sauces that would not send your blood sugar through the roof. So, he partnered with Gia Brands Inc. and they developed a sugar-free option.
What BBQ Sauces G. Hughes Offers
There are different options for BBQ sauce. According to their website, G. Hughes offers Carolina Gold, Mesquite, Hickory, Honey Flavored, Carolina Style Sweet Heat, and Sweet and Spicy. We have not found those here in Nova Scotia. We have found and enjoyed their original blend and the Maple Brown Sugar Flavored BBQ sauce. Both of these have 10 calories, 0 grams of fat, 1 gram of carbs, and 0 grams of protein in a serving size of 2 tablespoons.
A Review of the G. Hughes BBQ Sauce
I really enjoy this sauce. I love it on the meat, and I love it to dip in beside the meat. It is tangy, sweet, and delicious. They do use sucralose, which is not our favourite sugar alcohol, but their sauces don’t have that bitter aftertaste that some sweeteners give off. We have found these sauces in Costco, as well as some of our more local grocery stores. Honestly, when BBQ season started, I bought them whenever I saw them just in case I couldn’t find it when we were ready to grill. We now have about 5 bottles under the cupboard, because I kept stocking up. I have no regrets!
Other Sugar Free G. Hughes Sauces
We recently tried the G. Hughes sugar free ketchup and enjoyed that very much. It’s a little sweeter than the Heinz sugar free option. The nutritional information is about the same as the BBQ sauces – 2 grams of carbs in 2 tablespoons. Looking on their website, I see that they also do dipping sauces, a steak sauce, a stirfry sauce, marinades, salad dressings, and wing sauces. Hopefully, the more popular they become, the further north they will travel!
A Final Thought on G. Hughes BBQ Sauce
It’s so nice to have a company that is conscious of the movement towards keto and sugar free options. The ingredients are fairly common items you can pick up in any grocery store, and the amount of chemicals is minimal. You won’t get any fats or proteins from these sauces, but truly, sauces are meant to complement the meal, not be the meal. For an extra gram of carb or two, I can easily fit it into my keto meal plan and it makes me excited for my dinner. I give this company two thumbs up!
