Bill and I have been working really hard and it was time for a getaway. Due to COVID, we couldn’t go far, but we decided to take the long weekend in February and go to the city – Halifax Regional Municipality. This area includes Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville. We stayed in a hotel for three nights. It was awesome. We found out if you could eat keto in Halifax first hand. Oh, and our cats were find because Bill’s mom looked after them for us. You know it’s all about the #ketocats!
Keto in Halifax at First
First of all, our hotel had a Starbucks in the lobby. You know we made good use of that! I ordered a blond roast with 2 heavy cream. Bill ordered a fancy Americano, double shot, with heavy cream. We had way too many of these over the weekend and it was expensive, but so delicious!
Friday night we got in and needed something for supper. We didn’t feel like going out as we had both worked all day so we decided on pizza. There are two options for keto-friendly pizza that I know of in the city: Stone Pizza and Pizza Girls. We had Stone Pizza last time so we decided to try Pizza Girls. They have one of their locations that gives you the option of ordering a pizza that uses fat head dough pizza crust. We had bacon and green pepper as toppings. It was so nice to have a pizza delivered again.
It’s the little things that make me happy. The pizza was tasty. The crust was a little, shall we say, well done. But overall, it tasted good. The sauce was good and the toppings were great. Of course, the melted cheese over the entire thing made it even better. We will definitely try them again.
Keto in Halifax Breakfast
For breakfast / lunch / brunch the next morning and Sunday morning, we went to Pur and Simple. This Canadian franchise is amazing. We will definitely be returning there! I did a separate blog about this restaurant chain because it was too exciting and there were too many options to celebrate!
Saturday we were exhausted from a whole lot of shopping and wrestling watching, so we just went to Swiss Chalet. We had the quarter chicken dinner with Caesar salad. Now, we asked for no croutons and they still brought the roll out, but that’s ok. We didn’t specifically ask for no roll – we actually forgot about it. We just didn’t eat it. It was good, what we expected from one of our go-to quick meals.
Sunday night, we went to a new-to-us restaurant called Chef Abod Café and Catering. It’s a little spot that doesn’t demand much attention on a street lined with car dealerships. I never would have gone in except that I had done some research before our trip and this option came up as keto-friendly. It was keto-friendly and taste-friendly too! Holy moly! They serve Middle Eastern food along with the atmosphere.
AND they have an entire page with keto meals. I had the Tandoori chicken with cauliflower rice and grilled vegetables. Now, I don’t usually like cauliflower rice, but this was seasoned and cooked to perfection and I couldn’t stop eating it. The grilled vegetables were keto-friendly, with mainly green beans, broccoli and Brussel sprouts.
Too Good For Words
Again, they were seasoned perfectly – not too hot, just full of flavour. Bill had the lemon chicken kebobs and said they were good too, but I couldn’t stop eating my meal to really find out. Unfortunately, we had to leave in a bit of a hurry to take care of something. They apologized for not getting the cheque to us faster, but explained that in their culture, you take your time and eating a meal is an experience.
We apologized back (I mean, we are Canadian so that’s what we do) and explained why we had to cut our visit a little short. We will definitely be back though. If you are ever in Halifax and have the opportunity to try this place, you really need to. I can’t say enough about them! This is keto in Halifax.
And then, there was the desserts. On both Saturday and Sunday we went to Antoinette’s Cheesecakes. They always have a keto option that is full of wonderful fat, as well as an abundance of calories, but this was vacation! On Saturday, they had a strawberry cheesecake as their keto option.
You Can’t Do Keto in Halifax without Antoinette’s
Of course, their huge slices also come with a bunch of real whipped cream on the side and top. It was heavenly. On Sunday, their keto option was a marble cheesecake. This was Bill’s favourite. It was decadent and sinful and we savoured every bite of it!
So, that was our trip to Halifax. It was certainly filled with delicious treats, but it was our getaway. We splurged, but we stayed within our carb counts and did not get kicked out of ketosis. We did go over our calories, but we planned for that. Halifax is getting more and more keto options all the time. We will continue to explore our home city and fill you in on what comes next!
