Taco Bell is actually a pretty easy place to order when you are following keto.  I live in Canada, so I have the Canadian menu and nutritional information.  The American information may be slightly different.  But don’t worry you can keto taco bell wherever you live.

Adapting the Menu to Keto

When you look at their menu, all of the items are pretty much the same – it’s just the wrapping that’s different.  You can have a tortilla wrap or a hard shell.  But the insides of the items are the same: steak, beef or chicken.  So you just ask for a salad or a “power bowl” instead of the shell or wrap.

The meats are fine for keto.  The beef has no net carbs.  The steak and chicken each have one gram of net carbs in them.  You will get lettuce as the base of your salad.  And then you can add your extras.  I would definitely add some cheese!  The cheddar cheese and 3-cheese blend both have no carbs in them. 

To Keto Taco Bell Use What’s Available as Additions

You can also add some jalapenos without adding any carbs.  For sauces, they have several options available.  Their spicy ranch sauce, creamy jalapeno sauce and creamy chipotle are carb-free.  You can also add a hot sauce packet if you are feeling adventurous without any carbs.

Then you get into a few add on’s that add a carb or two but can easily fit into your meal if you like them.  Guacamole only adds one carb.  I admit, I am a bit uncultured here in sheltered Nova Scotia so I had to look up what Pico de Gallo was.  I’ll share it so you can seem smart when someone asks if you want it!  It is a kind of salsa that is uncooked and has larger chunks of vegetables in it.  Now you know!  It adds 2 grams of net carbs.  The red sauce also adds 2 grams of net carbs.

When You Keto Taco Bell Avoid These

There are a few things on the menu I would avoid.  Their nacho cheese sauce has 5 grams of net carbs in a serving.  As well, the only sour cream I could find in their information was low-fat and had 3 grams of net carbs in a serving.  This is the exact opposite of what we keto people want!  I had to look up what the red strips were.  They are red coloured strips of tortillas.  Obviously, those are off limits.

Taco Bell has good information online for their nutritional facts at www.tacobell.ca.  If you go in as if you are ordering online, you can customize what you want and it breaks down what each item has for nutrition.  And then you can actually put in your order online.  Bill and I love when restaurants have this option so we can order things how we want them without any discussion of why.  Overall, Taco Bell is a good option for keto if you are looking for a fast food option.
