In-N-Out Burger is world famous, which is interesting as they are only in 7 of the United States. I have heard many good things about this chain restaurant, and I was surprised to find out that while they have 379 locations, they are all in the western part of the States. So, for those of you lucky enough to have one nearby, here is how you can eat keto at In-N-Out Burger.

The History

This chain was started in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder. It was created in a tiny space that served as a drive-thru hamburger stand in California. Later on that year, Harry designed a speaker box so people didn’t have to leave their cars to order the food. My lazy butt thanks you for this, Harry!

The food was made from fresh ingredients, and it quickly became popular in the area. By 1958, there were 5 restaurants in southern California. Harry and Esther kept careful watch over it all. In 1963, they opened a new facility to make the beef patties. Until then, Esther had used a manual press to form the patties for the restaurants.

In 1976, Harry died and his sons took over running the chain. By this time, they had 18 restaurants. By 1988, there were 50 restaurants, and in 1994 the 100th restaurant opened. In 2015, the 300th restaurant opened. As of August 2022, In-N-Out Burger is listed as having 379 restaurants!

Are the Burgers Keto at In-N-Out Burger?

The website has the nutritional information listed, which is great. They have an option called the “Protein Style” burger which means the burger has a lettuce wrap instead of a bun. That’s even easier for us keto people! Now, each ingredient is not listed, but you can figure out most of the information from their options.

The hamburger is one patty with lettuce, tomato, their “spread,” and onions. With the lettuce wrap, this option has 17 grams of fat, 8 grams of net carbs, and 13 grams of protein.

The cheeseburger is the same as above but with a slice of cheese included. With the lettuce wrap, this option has 25 grams of fat, 8 grams of net carbs, and 18 grams of protein.

The double double burger has 2 beef patties, lettuce, tomato, “spread,” 2 slices of cheese, and onions. This bigger burger has 39 grams of fat, 8 grams of net carbs, and 33 grams of protein.

Are the Sides Keto at In-N-Out Burger?

The only side they have listed is french fries, so that is definitely not keto friendly. I was curious, however, as to what this “spread” actually is. Of course, the exact recipe is not officially available, but it seems to be a mixture of ketchup, mayonnaise, and a sweet pickle relish. If you are sensitive to sugar, this might be too much for you. I would say it’s definitely where most of the carbs are coming from. I’m not sure if you can get your burger with just mayonnaise. If not, and you’re sensitive to sugar, you might want to take your burger home and put your own condiments on it.

Drinks at In-N-Out Burger

They have a few options for drinks. Of course, there is the Diet Coke option. They also have a Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade, which has 2 grams of carbs in 15 ounces. There is an iced tea drink that has 0 grams of carbs. This is not to be confused with the sweet tea, which has lots of carbs and sugar in it.

Final Thoughts on Eating Keto at In-N-Out Burger

I have heard amazing things about this place. We haven’t traveled to the west coast much, although another trip to Las Vegas is on my bucket list! They say that they have not expanded east because of their dedication to fresh ingredients. The restaurant will only expand to areas where their production plants can reach by their own trucking system. That’s admirable, but doesn’t help my desire to taste their food!

If you are lucky enough to have one of these restaurants nearby, let me know how they are. Are they worth a trip west? Hmmm, should I head to Nevado, Texas, or maybe California? Definitely somewhere warm in the middle of winter, I’m thinking!
