One thing I’ve been missing on keto is the frozen pizza you grab at the grocery store. It was never my favourite food, but I realized once I couldn’t have it that it was a good, convenient food that sometimes hit the spot! Sure, you can make a pizza that is keto. You can even find take out places that make pizza that is keto friendly. But there’s nothing like having a hard day and popping a frozen pizza in the oven for dinner. So, imagine my excitement when I went to our local grocery store chain and found the Unbun Frozen Pizza in the freezer!
A Little About Unbun Foods
Gus Klemos is the founder of Unbun Foods. He is of Greek descent and is from Toronto, Canada. He founded Unbun Foods in 2017. According to their website, he was struggling with a lettuce wrap. We’ve all been there. The burger slides out of the lettuce and ends up in our laps! He said something like, “Lettuce ain’t no bun” and decided he could do better.
Unbun Foods offers a good option indeed! They are keto, paleo, grain-free and gluten-free. They are now in over 1250 locations. I first saw the Unbun frozen pepperoni pizza in our grocery store a couple of months ago. It’s not unusual for something from Ontario to take a few years to make it to good old Nova Scotia.
Unbun Frozen Pizza Crust
The crust for Unbun pizzas contains real ingredients. It includes things like almond flour, coconut milk, and extra virgin olive oil. On their website, they list all their ingredients and if you hover the mouse cursor over the ingredient, it shows you a picture of the food in its natural form. It’s so refreshing to see something keto that isn’t full of unpronounceable chemicals!
The Numbers on Unbun Frozen Pizza
Now, often, you will find a product and it looks good for keto at first glance. Then you see the serving size, and it’s a tablespoon of the product. In the case of pizza, it may be for one slice, but they are slicing a 12 inch pizza into 8 slices. Not cool and not realistic for me! Who eats a 1.5 inch slice of pizza???
The Unbun frozen pizza I enjoy the most is the pepperoni. FYI, they put the pepperoni on top of the cheese so the slices of meat crisp up. Proper thing! Anyway, their serving size is ½ the pizza. That’s right, they give you the numbers on two good sized pieces. For these two slices (or ½ the pizza), there are 250 calories. They have 15 grams of fat, 5 grams of net carbs, and 17 grams of protein.
The total number of carbs listed are 28 grams, but 23 grams of those are fiber. Because our bodies don’t break down fiber, but use it to push other foods and nutrients through our bodies, we can subtract those numbers and consider only the net carbs. So, ½ this pizza will only cost you 5 grams of carbs out of your 20 grams a day.

While I’ve only tried the frozen pizzas, they also have keto friendly bread options. I’m looking forward to trying them, as other keto bread options have not been popular in my house. Of course, Unbun has buns, because that’s what started it all! They also have baguettes, which look like sub buns. You can have bagels as well, in several different flavours. Even the pizza has options. You can just buy the crust and put the toppings on that you choose. I’ve seen the meat lovers frozen pizza in our grocery store. They have several other options according to their website, but I haven’t seen those in Nova Scotia yet.
Where to Buy Unbun Frozen Pizzas
So, that brings me to where you can find these yummy little pieces of convenience. They are in many of the larger grocery store chains, such as Loblaws, Longos, Safeway, Fortinos, and ours in the Maritimes, Sobeys. They are available in the US as well as across Canada. If you can’t find them in a store, you can purchase items online and have them shipped to you.
My Thoughts on Unbun Frozen Pizza
I was hesitant and didn’t want to set very high expectations when I first tried the pizza. Here’s the thing – if you want frozen pizza, it tastes like frozen pizza. If you want a fresh, gourmet pizza, this isn’t going to cut it. I was pleasantly surprised because it has the texture and the taste of the frozen pizzas I ate before I started keto, without all the carbs and junk in it.
For us, it was a winner. We’ve made it a habit to buy one for Friday nights when we’re tired and ready to start the weekend. It’s a bit more expensive than your typical frozen pizzas that have lots of chemicals and carbs, but it’s not outrageous and it’s better for you. So, thank you Unbun Foods, for giving me back something I didn’t realize I’d lost. I’m a big fan!
