Today is flitch day. What the heck is that? Well, it turns out that it’s an ancient tradition that is perfect for keto! In 1104, it became a custom that married couples would stand trial to prove their strength of love and faithfulness after one year and one day of marriage. If they were successful, they were gifted a “flitch” of bacon – approximately ½ a pig.
A Day Perfect for Keto
If ever there was a day that was perfect for us at Married to Keto, this is it! It’s a day that celebrates love with gifting of bacon. Umm, hello? The only thing we love more than bacon is each other!
According to National Today, about 70% of bacon is eaten at breakfast time. We certainly fall into that category. We start most of our days with a keto French toast muffin, cheesy biscuit, or blueberry biscuit and a strip of bacon. That gives us our fat content along with some protein, and just a couple of carbs to start our day.
Prepping the Bacon
If you get an entire flitch of bacon, you’re going to need a big freezer! Luckily, bacon does freeze well. We usually buy a few at Costco and then put all but one in the freezer. One gets left out to use up right away. We often use the air fryer. Just twist each strip and put on the rack in the air fryer for about 13 minutes. It does an amazing job. Or, you can bake it in the oven. We put tinfoil down on a baking sheet and put it in at 425 F for about 10-13 minutes. Either way, it’s an easy clean up and no fat splatters on you and your stove.
Why Bacon is Perfect for Keto
For years, bacon has gotten a bad rep. Health practitioners told us that eating bacon would lead to high cholesterol, which would lead to heart disease. What research is actually telling us now, is that high cholesterol and heart disease is more often caused by things like processed foods and sugar. Now, I wouldn’t eat a pound of bacon every day, but having a strip of it every day has not increased our cholesterol. It’s worked for us.
Celebrating Flitch Day
You can have bacon for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We love a good bacon cheeseburger (without the bun, of course). We will often add bacon to our cheesy garlic fingers recipe to give it a little extra salty goodness. Have a BLT on chafflewhich bread for a delicious lunch or dinner. Or, one of our favourite meals is “brupper” – breakfast for supper. Bacon just makes everything better!
So, we’ve been together now for 24 years with no regrets. Does that mean we’re owed 24 flitches of bacon???
