The number one question we are asked about our weight loss and our commitment to the keto lifestyle is, “How do I get started?”  This is a five part series that answers that question.  Part 1 is about finding your motivation.  For Bill and I, the motivation was his health.  He was told that he needed to do keto or face the rest of his life (shortened life) with medical issues.  Part 2 is going to talk about the keto research we did to discover how we wanted to get started on keto.

When you Google “keto,” you will come up with millions of hits.  You will find why you should do keto, why you shouldn’t do keto, and everything in between.  But we stumbled across some keto experts who helped us make sense of it all.  I’m going to share their information with you here.

Our First Taste of Keto Research

The first one we came across was Dr. Ken Berry.  He is a family physician in the United States who said he was becoming the stereotypical fat doctor who was advising all his patients to lose weight.  I really liked his down-to-earth approach, particularly in his earlier videos and writings.  He has a book that is called “Lies My Doctor Told Me” that exposes health myths such as avoiding fat.

Berry’s YouTube channel has his videos broken down into sections, and I watched the ones on keto.  He also talks a lot about intermittent fasting and the carnivore diet.  Those can come later, if they are of interest to you.  I’ve dabbled in the intermittent fasting, but I know the carnivore diet is not for me.  But his vlogs on keto helped me gain confidence that keto was safe and doable for us.

Dr. Berg’s Take

Dr. Eric Berg is a chiropractor who turned to keto as a way to help his patients lose weight that was contributing to their pain.  He knows the medical terminology but he keeps that to a minimum in his writings, which makes him easier to understand.  Dr. Berg wrote “The 7 Principles of Fat Burning” and “The Healthy Keto Plan.”  Berg has a YouTube channel where he offers advice on doing keto.  He also has a YouTube channel that is dedicated to keto recipes, which is handy.  The one thing I’m not a fan of is that he is constantly promoting his keto education course.  But, hey, I guess everyone has to make a living, right?

Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt is another doctor who made me feel comfortable that keto was a safe and natural way to live.  He was a family doctor in Sweden and his website is Diet Doctor.  His YouTube channel is available and we particularly enjoyed his videos called “A Keto Diet for Beginners.”  He does use some medical terms, but not in an obnoxious way, just in a reassuring way when you feel he knows what he’s talking about.

Keto Research for Women

Shawn Mynar is a woman with a nutritionist background who I just discovered recently.  I’ve been listening to her old podcast, “Keto for Women.”   I absolutely love this information!  As a woman, I have always known that my body works very differently from Bill’s when it comes to weight loss and weight gain.  He could always cut one thing out of his diet and lose 20 pounds.  I would stay the same, maybe lose a pound or two, or maybe even gain a pound.  Shawn helps bring knowledge and perspective around why this happens.  Our bodies lose weight differently because they work differently.

She specializes in coaching women, and because of that, she does have a lot of advertisements for her business.  The information is worth pushing through that.  I would encourage every women who is thinking about going on keto to listen to her podcast episodes from “Keto for Women.”

The Famous Jimmy Moore

Last but not least is Jimmy Moore.  He is a character who has several podcasts and numerous books published.  He lost 180 pounds in 2004 by going low carb.  Moore is witty and energetic, which makes him so much fun to listen to!  He has a couple of podcasts, including “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” and “Real Talk.”  If you listen to any keto podcasts you will hear his name and, if you’re lucky, an interview with him.

Shamless Plug of Our Book!

Time for a shameless plug.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Bill and I have a Keto Workbook for sale on Amazon as well.  While we don’t have the experience of the people I’ve mentioned, we do have the experience of losing a combined weight of 220 pounds on the keto diet.  The workbook is meant to be interactive and help you work your way through the how’s and why’s of changing to a keto lifestyle.  You can find it on our store page of our website.

So, those are the main people I would look at if you are considering the keto lifestyle.  They are people with all different backgrounds and different credentials, but they all share a passion for the keto way of life.  You can find their books, find them on YouTube, and listen to their podcasts.  No matter how you learn, you will gain so much information from them and make your decisions on how to move to the next stage.  Stay tuned for our third part of this series, which looks at how to plan your switch to the keto lifestyle.
