I keep hearing about Five Guys for keto people, so I decided to do some research and see what it was all about. There is a Five Guys in a nearby city to me, and after seeing the information and the pictures, I am definitely going there next time! So can you at Keto at Five Guys?
The Founding of an Icon
Five Guys was started in Arlington, Virginia in 1986. It is called Five Guys because there were five brothers who started the business with their parents. Their parents, the Murrell’s, offered their sons a choice; go to college or start a business. They decided on the business route. When they started out, they focused on quality ingredients that were fresh. Their strategy worked and the restaurant became very popular.
In 2003, they began to offer franchise opportunities. In just under 18 months, they had sold options to over 300 units! There are now almost 1700 locations world wide, and not one of those locations have a freezer in their restaurant.
Keto at Five Guys Nutritional Information
The nutritional information is incredibly keto-friendly as they break it down by ingredient, rather than meal option. So, they have the information on the meat, the bun and the toppings. This is amazing as you don’t have to try to figure out what the hamburger would be without the bun, or what the bunless burger would be without ketchup. It would be wonderful if every place did this!
So what is the information? Well, because they use quality ingredients, their meats don’t have unnecessary fillers in them so they are carb-free or carb-light. The burger patty has no carbs in it. The hot dog, of course, has carbs but only 2 of them. The bacon does not have any carbs in it. Their regular burgers come with 2 beef patties. If you only want one patty, you can order the little burger. But there’s no carbs, so why not go with two?
Keto at Five Guys Means Skipping the Bun
Because we’re keto, we’ll skip the buns. That being said, they have pictures on their Instagram of their burgers wrapped in lettuce and it looks amazing! It’s not just on a plastic dish with a leaf of lettuce hanging over the patty. I can’t wait to see if it is really done that well when I go there. It’s not listed on their menu, but all the keto sites tell us that it is an option if you ask, so we will ask!
Now the toppings. You’re going to want to skip the BBQ sauce. It’s loaded with sugar at 14 net carbs. The ketchup has 5 carbs and 4 of those are sugar. I would either do without the ketchup or take your own sugar-free options. Relish, of course, is also all sugar with 3 grams of the sweet carbs. The A1 sauce also has 3 grams of carbs.
There are tons of toppings you can enjoy with no guilt. The onions come grilled or raw and both have 2 grams of carbs. The tomato also comes in at 2 grams of carbs. You can add green pepper, grilled mushrooms, Jalapenos, lettuce and pickles for 1 gram of carbs for each. The cheese, mayonnaise, hot sauce, and mustard have absolutely no carbs in them.
Your Macros
The burgers and hot dogs come as is, with cheese, with bacon, or with bacon and cheese together. Imagine a hot dog with bacon and cheese with some grilled onions and mustard all for 4 grams of carbs. Or you can get a bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions, mayo, lettuce and tomato for 5 grams of carbs. You can also get a sandwich without the bun. They offer vegetables, vegetables with cheese, or a BLT that could be keto-friendly.
I am very excited to give them a try the next time I’m in the city. I will let you know what I think! According to Google, they made $1.7 billion last year. All those people buying their burgers can’t be wrong, can they?
