It was our anniversary on July 14th. We’ve been together for 25 years! So, we wanted to do something special – but not too expensive. We’re still saving up to return to Mexico next winter, so it had to be fun, but not super-expensive fun. We decided to go for a long motorcycle ride and stop over on the south shore for dinner. After a Google search, we decided to try out a place in Mahone Bay. Here’s how we did keto at Rebecca’s.
Why We Chose to Try Keto at Rebecca’s
The website sold us on trying this place out. Rebecca’s is a farm to table place, meaning that food is locally sourced and it uses seasonal food. They have Nova Scotian drinks, such as locally roasted coffee and locally brewed beer. It’s a dog-friendly patio, which is always a plus for us animal lovers. But mostly, they state that they pay attention to special diets, such as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free, as well as food allergies. Seemed like they’d be willing to work with us to make us something we could enjoy.
Starters That Are Keto at Rebecca’s
So, let’s get to the good stuff – food! We had the seared scallops for an appetizer, and Oh My Goodness! They saturate the scallops in butter and they melt in your mouth. So good. They serve them with mixed greens and shaved asiago. We ate the entire thing and thought about just ordering two more plates of that!
They have a couple of other options that you may be able to make keto-friendly. There are mussels on the menu, and you could ask for no roll. They also have warmed olives, which might be good…if you like olives. You’d have to ask to go without the baguette. And, they have the typical Caesar salad that you could get with no croutons.
Main Meals That Are Keto at Rebecca’s
I got the pan-seared haddock. I asked for no potatoes, and instead they gave me extra seasonal vegetables. The vegetables included lots that were keto-friendly, such as zucchini, asparagus, bok choy, and cauliflower. There was lots of butter on the haddock as well as a lemon sauce (like, from real lemons) that I wasn’t a huge fan of. I scraped off the lemon and I was extremely happy with my meal. It was tasty!
Bill got the home burger with no caramelized onions, buns or potatoes. They offered to give him seasonal vegetables as well, which he got and enjoyed immensely. You can get it with a fried egg as well, which would make it even better for keto! Bottom line was both meals were delicious and you could tell the ingredients were fresh.
The Atmosphere at Rebecca’s
From what I’ve read online, this restaurant is very popular, and I see why! The menu changes with the seasons, and I love that. The article I read stated that they do not have a deep fryer in their kitchen, and I believe it. None of the items on the menu were deep fried. Our server was great. She was knowledgeable and efficient, while still being friendly. It’s a fine line, and she walked it well. We always feel a little awkward changing menu items to make them keto-friendly, but she took it in stride and offered other suggestions as we went. She was also trying to train someone as she went, and she didn’t lose her patience once.
Looking online, most of the reviews are positive and I would agree with them. Some of the reviews made me laugh. Like the person who found the outside patio too loud with cars driving by?!? Umm, that’s part of being outside. But, overall, people agreed with our opinion that the food was fabulous and the service was great.
A Final Thought About The Restaurant
The prices were not outrageous, but it wasn’t a cheap meal. You pay a little extra for locally sourced food, and we are completely okay with that, as long as the flavour is there. The flavour was, in fact, amazing and they cooked the scallops perfectly! Oh, and I forgot to mention that they have Michelob Ultra – a low carb beer. It was ice cold on a very hot day, and after riding motorcycles all day, it tasted so good! We only had one, but I could have had many if we weren’t still riding motorcycles. Overall, we had a great experience. We will definitely be back!
