According to National Day Calendar, it’s Chocolate Ice Cream Day! If you have read this blog before, you’ll likely know that I am a BIG fan of ice cream. I was pointing out the ice cream parlours before I could talk. And chocolate was one of my absolute favourites. Apparently, I’m not alone. Chocolate is the second most popular flavour, after vanilla. So we had to find a way to make Keto Chocolate Ice Cream.
Chocolate ice cream has been in existence for over 100 years and became popular in the United States in the late 1800’s. Since then, many flavours have built on the original chocolate ice cream. The makers have added such ingredients as peanut butter, marshmallow, fudge, chocolate chips, and mint.
Giving Up Chocolate Ice Cream?
When I became keto, I thought I would have to give up ice cream forever. I was so happy when I realized that there are a few different brands out there that do low carb options. Enlightened, Rebel, Halo and Keto Pint all boast that they are keto friendly. You do need to be careful of what they consider keto friendly and the portion size they quote in the nutritional label. Some have more carbs than others.
The keto ice creams are a good option once in a while. They have a lot of sugar alcohols so they aren’t great if weight loss is your goal. To me, they also have the aftertaste of a sugar alcohol. They are also very expensive! We prefer to make our own ice cream when we have the craving. That way, we know exactly what we put in it and we find it tastes even better!
In the spirit of the day, we are sharing our recipe for a soft-serve chocolate ice cream that tastes a bit like a Frosty from Wendy’s. Enjoy!
