Last weekend, we went away for a little mini-vacation. We planned to eat at Cora for breakfast on our first day away. I made a rookie mistake. We didn’t even look at the nutritional information. I mean, it’s breakfast. Eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee…seems like a no-brainer. Obviously, we would stay away from the pancakes and waffles and the fresh fruit. But it was a good reminder that all is not always what it seems! Maybe Cora isn’t keto!
Cora Isn’t Keto for Hollandaise
It started as we sat down with our menus and Bill wondered about the hollandaise sauce. We make one at home that is a keto dream! All fat and flavour! So, we looked it up. And we are glad we did because we would have made some bad decisions without even realizing it. The sauce had 13 grams of carbs! So, we scrapped that and looked at the rest of the menu.
We ordered Jo’s Construction without the toast or potatoes. It is 3 eggs, 3 pieces of bacon and 3 sausages. He had coffee and I had tea. We take both black, so no worries there. Then we looked at the other nutritional information just to be sure we were okay. The sausages had 8 grams of carbs!
Even the Bacon Has Carbs… so not Keto
Now, we’re on a get-away and I’m all for throwing caution to the wind to a certain extent, but 8 carbs in sausage? When we got it, we realized they had a lot of filler in them. So out of the 3 sausages, we ate 1 of them. Even the bacon had 3 carbs in it.
Link would like to get away for the weekend too!
This is not a knock against Cora’s restaurant. Lots of people love their food. I used to love their food when I ate the fresh fruit and the waffles or pancakes. Like many places though, they have sugar in most things (which is part of why it is yummy and gets you craving more). This is more a cautionary tale of taking the time to double check the information before you go out to eat. Seriously, how many times have I given that advice and still I got lazy and didn’t check before we went. Don’t assume something is fine just because it’s a certain kind of food (like breakfast).
Too Many Carbs Means Cora Isn’t Keto
Taking in more grams of carbs than you plan doesn’t have to be the end of the world. You can relax your standards at times. For me, I like to make the decision to take in extra carbs – not do it accidentally. I didn’t even enjoy that sausage. If I had eaten all three, it would have put me over my daily allotment of carbs. That would have made me cranky.
It also would have upset my stomach, which is not what I want when I am out enjoying a weekend away with my partner. So, don’t be like I was this weekend. Do your research, plan ahead and enjoy eating meals you don’t have to prepare.
