Whatâs the first thing we learn as children? Our ABCâs. So, we thought it would be a fun idea to do the ABCâs of keto! This blog series looks at some of the main ideas and the not-so-main ideas of keto as we work our way through the alphabet. The next one in our series is: E is for eggs on keto.
Benefits of Eggs on Keto
According to Healthline, one of the most nutritious foods we can eat are eggs. They have a little bit of most nutrients you need. Are high in protein, so you feel full after you eat them. They also keep you feeling full longer, so you wonât eat as much afterwards. Eggs even help protect you from eye disease, like cataracts.
Are There Reasons Not to Eat Eggs on Keto?
The only reason I found in my review of information that people didnât eat eggs was ethical reasons. Vegans find the idea of eating an animal byproduct distasteful. It is true that we have manipulated nature a bit to ensure hens lay more eggs than they would if in the wild. It is also true that some chicken farmers donât treat their hens with the care we would like. Only you can decide if eating eggs is the right decision for you. But, there donât seem to be any health reasons why you shouldnât eat eggs on keto.
Myths about Eggs
Over the years, there have been so many myths about eggs. We went from eating them daily to only eating egg whites if we did eat them, and now weâre back to eating the whole egg. What gives?
Researchers found that eggs have high levels of cholesterol in them, so they reasoned that eating too many eggs would increase your blood cholesterol levels. Turns out, thatâs not the case. Eating them may increase your HDL (the âgoodâ cholesterol) but our bodies are able to process this type easily. Rather than increasing your chances of heart disease and stroke, eating eggs may actually help protect you from it.
There was a time that health professionals said eating eggs every day would hurt your health. According to Healthline, most people can eat up to 3 eggs a day safely. Like anything, if you find it doesnât work for you, donât do it. But unless you have specific health concerns, eat your eggs worry free.
Are Eggs on Keto Okay?
Over the years, weâve learned to only eat egg whites to avoid all the cholesterol in the yolks. If you are on keto, itâs important to eat the yolks to keep your fat numbers up. Research has also found that eating the whole egg gives you many health benefits. You get a lot of protein, and all 9 essential amino acids your body needs but canât make by itself. Besides, the yolk is where the flavour is. Eat the yellow!
In fact, the egg fast is a short-term diet created from the keto diet. This is when you eat only eggs, cheese, and a healthy fat (like butter) for 3 – 5 days. This is often done to break a weight loss plateau. I have to admit, the idea of an egg fast makes me kind of queasy. But, to each their own.
Keto Makes Eating Eggs Easy
There are lots of ways to incorporate eggs into your keto diet. Eggs are an important part of breakfast foods. You can eat them boiled, fried, poached, hard boiled, or scrambled. Pair that with some bacon and you have a delicious keto breakfast. Theyâre also great snacks. We often have hard boiled eggs in the fridge or if weâre feeling fancy, we have deviled eggs. For lunch, you can try an egg sandwich on a low-carb bread or tortilla. Itâs quick and easy to grab on the go. And finally, one of our favourite dinners is âbrupperâ – breakfast for supper, on a keto flatbread. We have fried eggs, bacon, cheese and mayonnaise on the flatbread. It is delicious!
There are so many ways to enjoy eggs on keto. Relax and enjoy these tasty morsels!
