Yes, I’m excited to be going to Mexico for a week, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not missing riding my motorcycle. It’s cold in Nova Scotia, and I long to be out and feeling the wind against me as I lean into a corner. So, I’ve been planning summer road trips. Motorcycle road trips for keto can be a bit more challenging than in a car, so I thought I’d share my plan for one of the most iconic routes ever for a motorcycle. Here is my Cape Breton keto road trip!
Day 1 of the Cape Breton Keto Road Trip
Our first day will consist of getting from our home to Port Hawkesbury. This will take about 6 hours of driving, assuming that we avoid the highways. I’ve planned to go down the number 7 highway which follows our province’s Eastern Shore along the Atlantic Ocean. We will, of course, stop at Tim Horton’s along the way, as any good Canadian does.
There aren’t a lot of options for restaurants along the Eastern Shore for keto friendly foods, so I had to do a fair amount of research. For lunch, we will stop at The Henley House in Sheet Harbour. They have a couple of good lunch options for keto. One is the clubhouse sandwich, which you can get without the bread. They also have a yummy sounding burger where you can just skip the bun. It looks like you can get a Caesar salad without the croutons as a side.
We will plan to spend the night at The Cove Motel and Restaurant. This place is just by the Canso Causeway, which takes you from the mainland of Nova Scotia onto Cape Breton Island. The Cove’s restaurant has some great dinner options. For an appetizer, they have bacon wrapped scallops, Caesar salads (ask for no croutons) and garden salads. This is a seafood lover’s dream, with options of haddock, cod fish, scallops, or lobster. For the landlubbers among your group, they also have steak.
Day 2 – The Cabot Trail
We will start our day with breakfast at the motel. Their restaurant serves bacon or sausage with eggs, or you can get an omelet. Don’t fall for the gluten-free toast option. Just because it’s gluten-free, doesn’t mean it’s keto. It still has lots of carbs in it.
The Cabot Trail is a beautiful drive. You can do it clockwise, or counter-clockwise. We haven’t quite decided which way we will go yet, but it’s a huge controversy on the internet! I’ve looked at pubs along the trail, and I think we will just play this one by ear. Part of enjoying this day will be having the flexibility to stop when we want to or when we see something interesting. We can always find a gas station with almonds, cheese and pepperoni.
We will spend the night at Port Hood’s Hebridean Motel. Nearby is The Clove Hitch Bar and Bistro, which has regular pub food. It also has an interesting caprese salad that looks delicious. If you want to get fancier than a burger with no bun, they also have chicken breast, haddock, and even a lobster dinner!
Day 3 of the Cape Breton Keto Road Trip
On our last day of our road trip, we will have breakfast in Port Hood at Sandeannie’s. It is an all-day breakfast place that is ideal for keto people! They have the typical bacon and eggs, omelets, and a breakfast burger you can get without the bun. They also have steak and eggs as an option. Yes, please!
On our way home, we will go towards the north of the province and meet up with highway 2 – just to mix it up a little. For lunch, we will stop in a little community called Stewiacke. The Whistler’s Pub is well known in the area for having great food. You want steak? They have an 8 ounce, a 12 ounce, and even a 16 ounce option! They have burgers, including a Tex Mex burger that sounds amazing! Just get them without the bun. You can also get a warm Caesar salad, or the traditional Caesar salad with no croutons.
The End of the Cape Breton Keto Road Trip
With Bill’s work schedule, I’m not sure if this trip will happen this summer or not. But, if it can, it’s ready to go. The Cabot Trail on a motorcycle is definitely on my bucket list. Now, we just have to decide which direction we go! Cape Breton, here we come!
