Last week we talked about the growing trend of keto. Unfortunately, it led to more questions than answers. Most people thought it was great that the amount of people and products was growing in the keto space, but it left people wondering who is causing this growth. Today I’m going to explore that question with the demographics of keto.
Where I’m Getting the Demographics of Keto
Married to Keto isn’t the largest sample of demographic information you can have but is a good mirror of who is on keto and where they hail from. Our information matches up quite nice with other sources so I’m comfortable using our website statistics to reference here.
We use both Google Analytics and our Host Providers stats to find out information like how many people visit the site, their ages, locations, and what they like to read about. This is obviously very helpful when we create content for the blog, but also gives us an excellent snapshot of who is interested in keto.
The Age and Gender of Keto Users
Our main self-identified gender is female by far. Females make up 70% of our readers with males making up 25% and unidentified as 5%. It is very common knowledge that women tend to do keto more often, but it is also believed that women tend to do more research on the subject so male users may not be represented as a true number.
As far as age goes the 35 to 49 age brackets absolutely dominates at 82%. All other age bracket makes up the remaining 18%. This is consistent with other estimates of keto users. The only thing out of the norm for us was 5% of readers were underage. This means people under the age of 18. I truly hope it’s not social pressures making young people turn to keto.
The Location Demographics of Keto Users
This one fascinates me and is something I monitor weekly. You will notice Wendy writes a lot of articles on taking traditional foods and how they apply to a keto diet. We have done Ireland, China, and Germany to name a few. Those articles are based on people from those countries visiting Married to Keto.
What we have found is readers from the United States are the primary consumers for us. They represent the largest group of keto users in the world. That is consistent with the amount of known keto users as found by researchers. The second location for us is also consistent. Our home country of Canada even with its much smaller population has a staggering amount of people on keto.
Rounding out the top 5 locations for keto users is China, Costa Rica, and Germany. Those five countries make up to 90% of the visits we get. The other 10% are spread out amongst numerous countries with the most consistent being Kuwait, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
The Content Demographics of Keto Users
When it comes to content the most popular blogs and articles fall into frequently asked questions, keto myths, and recipes. This data may not represent keto fully because we pride ourselves on being a keto plan for beginners. We feel that may skew this number a bit. However, there isn’t a large margin for us between the big three and our other sections.
It appears the fear of keto is still very prevalent in society. Most people reach out to us to dispel something they have heard or fear. We do a lot of work to break down those untruths about our eating lifestyle and prove to people keto can be done safely and effectively long term. With people still turning to those old articles we know it will continue to be an uphill battle.
Keto in the End
With all this data crunching and percentages what does it really have to do with how you live your keto life? It doesn’t as “you do you,” but it does show us the trend of keto is growing with real people behind it from all over the world.
There is comfort in knowing that every time someone does research and learns a little more the stigma around keto will lessen. Picture a time when you ask for no bread at a restaurant, and no one gives you a weird look or starts asking questions.
It’s coming folks. The demographics prove it.
