A couple of weeks ago, Bill was in the city and the only restaurant within walking distance was Swiss Chalet.  So, we quickly looked up what was keto-friendly and he ended up having a wonderful meal.  That sealed the deal – it was time to do a restaurant guide for Swiss Chalet, so that you can eat keto at Swiss Chalet.

Nutritional Information Would Make It Easier To Eat Keto at Swiss Chalet

Swiss Chalet has their nutritional information online.  It isn’t the best, as it doesn’t allow you to see what the information would be if you made changes.  For example, some restaurants allow you to customize your salad and see how many net carbs you would be eating with the changes.  This one does not do that.  It’s a set menu with nutritional information.  It works, but doesn’t go over and above.

You are likely going to end up with a salad with the quarter chicken.  A Caesar salad has 13 grams of carbs, but that’s including the croutons.  My Fitness Pal has Swiss Chalet’s Caesar salad with no croutons listed as 1 net gram of carbs.  With the lettuce included, I’d be tempted to allow 2 grams of net carbs, but that’s still a great count.  The Caesar dressing doesn’t have any carbs listed in it, so there are no extra carbs there.

There are Some Keto Salad Options

If you prefer a garden salad, the starter salad is listed as having 2 grams of net carbs.  Be aware of the dressings though!  Ranch dressing is usually an okay option, but not in this case.  It has 13 grams of carbs in it!  The Italian dressing doesn’t have any net carbs in it.  The balsamic vinaigrette has 5 grams of net carbs.  The Chalet house dressing has 14 grams of net carbs, so again, be aware!  It looks like you bring your own dressing or use the Italian dressing.

If you are feeling a bit carb-lite for the day, there are a couple of sides as options that look really good.  One option is the garlic green beans with a garlic butter glaze.  It comes in at 8 grams of net carbs.  They also offer steamed vegetables made up of cauliflower, broccoli, and red peppers.  It comes in at 7 grams of net carbs.  Certainly not terrible!

There is a chicken Caesar salad on the menu as well, if you want it all together.  I tend to like my chicken at Swiss Chalet separate from my Caesar salad because I find the chicken with the skin so tasty.  Just get it without the croutons.

The Chicken is the Star When Eating Keto at Swiss Chalet

The rotisserie chicken at Swiss Chalet has no carbs in it.  This was a nice surprise!  The skin is seasoned but the spices are apparently carb-free.  Eat the dark meat (it has more fat) or the white meat without fear of any carbs sneaking in here.  It’s yummy and juicy and has the benefit of being certified humane.  The crispy chicken is also certified humane, but it is breaded so it adds a lot of carbs to the chicken.  Stick with the rotisserie.

So, here’s the million-dollar question: how many carbs are in the Chalet sauce? Shun me for this opinion, but here it goes.  Personally, I don’t like the Chalet sauce much so I don’t eat it.  I know, I’m weird.  But for those who do, I have some good news.  There is only 5 grams of carbs in 4 ounces of Chalet sauce.

Yes, You Can Eat the Chalet Sauce and Stay Keto at Swiss Chalet

If you dip your chicken in it, you will take in less than that.  If you pour it over your chicken or drink it from the cup (I’ve seen it happen – and it is gross) you need to add all 5 grams.  It is definitely doable to include the Chalet sauce in your keto meal.  It does, however, include actual sugar in it so if that is a concern, it may be off limits.

So that’s Swiss Chalet.  It’s our new go-to when we need a quick and easy meal.  It doesn’t upset my stomach like many fast-food restaurant options do and it tastes fresh.  I usually get the quarter chicken meal with a Caesar salad with no croutons.  I bring it home and put a little sugar-free, low-carb BBQ sauce on the side of my plate to dip the chicken in.  Ummm, I may need to go to Swiss Chalet this week!
