We love being keto…usually. But, there’s something about being at a BBQ and not having the bun to hold your hotdog or hamburger that’s just, well, sad. It was the one time that I kind of did miss normal food on keto. I figured this was our life now, and I just dealt with it. Sure, we tried wraps, chafflebread, and keto flatbread, but it wasn’t the same. Then, Carbonaut buns came into our lives, and we will be forever grateful!

Who Created Carbonaut Buns?

The founder of Carbonaut is Danny Houghton from BC, Canada. He launched his low-carb products in 2021 and it grew quickly! Today it is available in the United States as well as Canada in a lot of common grocery stores. His goal was to provide bakery-level quality products that offered a low-carb alternative to breads because he recognized the pain of having a hot dog or hamburger without the bun to hold everything together and aimed to do something about it!

What’s In Carbonaut Buns?

For me, this is the best part. They aren’t filled with chemicals to make you think you’re eating something you’re not. They have no artificial ingredients or preservatives and all the ingredients are plant-based. This does mean that the shelf life of the product is shorter than some of the other breads on the market. They have a shelf life of about 10 days, but grocery stores keep them frozen so if you keep them in the freezer at home until you are ready to use them, they last, well, maybe forever.

The Hamburger Buns

The numbers on the hamburger buns are really good. They each have 110 calories, 4 grams of fat, 2 grams of net carbs, and 9 grams of protein. The hamburger bun is round in shape and have a whole-grain look to them. The texture feels like bread and it tastes like bread. It holds your burger together so the toppings aren’t constantly sliding out like in a lettuce bun.

These Carbonaut buns are a game changer!

The Carbonaut Buns for Hot Dogs or Subs

These aren’t huge buns, but they are sufficient for a hot dog or a small sub. Each bun has 150 calories, 5 grams of fat, 3 grams of net carbs, and 12 grams of protein. They have the same texture and taste as the hamburger buns. One of my favourite foods in the summer was always hot dogs, so to have this option of a bun is life changing. The wieners without the buns are just not the same.

Other Carbonaut Products

Carbonaut has many other products, including low-carb breads, bagels, and pizza crusts. I haven’t tried the bagels yet because, honestly, I gave away my toaster when we turned to keto. Who knew keto would become so popular that companies would start giving us keto-friendly options?

Bill has tried the multi-grain bread, and said it is pretty good. I bought a couple of their white bread loaves from Costco, and I really wasn’t very impressed with that. The white bread just goes kind of gooey. It might be better if you toast it – like I said, we now don’t have a toaster. The white bread is certainly worth a try though. One slice has only 40 calories, 3 grams of fat, 1 gram of net carbs, and 1 gram of protein.

Preparing Carbonaut Buns

If you do freeze the Carbonaut buns, which I highly recommend unless you’re using them that night, they thaw really well. They don’t go soggy like regular bread and buns tend to do. If you’re like me and forget to take them out, you can microwave them. Be careful not to microwave them too much at a time or they turn hard. I found that out the hard way. I put them in for about 20 seconds at a time, and it takes 2-3 rounds. Or, you can put a cooling rack over your frying pan and steam them. They are delicious that way!

A Final Thought About Carbonaut Buns

Thank you so much for bringing these into my life! That sounds dramatic, but truly I’m enjoying BBQ like I haven’t in 3 years! Are they pricey? Sure are! Are they worth it? I think so. A package of hot dog buns has 6 in them and I pay about $8 – $9 for them at the grocery store. Such is life when you buy keto products. Several times I went to buy some, they sold out, so I guess others are also willing to pay for this quality.

I enter the grocery store every time with anxiety that Carbonaut will suddenly go out of business and I will be bun-less again. So, please, read this review and give them a try. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
